Aristotle Flashcards
empiricism?
view that all concepts originate in experience- that your senses will experience
what was Aristotle?
an empiricist who used posterior knowledge (required proof)
how did Aristotle view change?
Aristotle viewed change positively, things change to achieve their full potential are said to be fully actualised and to achieve their telos (known as eudaemonia)
How did Aristotle believe humans could reach eudaemonia ?
when they live virtuous lives as this leads to happiness
who taught aristotle?
Plato, but he approached topics of study very differently believing that forms existed within the objects themselves rather than in a different realm which can be readily perceived by the senses
how did Aristotle categorise different substances?
substances which are
- evident but will decay or die (a plant or animal)
- evident but will not decay or die but could change (time)
- immune to change (the number 2 will always be the number 2)
Aristotle believed that all things were to exist and some then caused to change
the material cause?
The material something is made of (part of a car) which represents impermanence the of the world

The efficient cause?
The cause of an object existing, why it exists at all (.manufacture of the car)
The formal cause ?

What’s potentiality?
When something has the potential to become something else
What’s actuality?
When an object fulfills its potential and becomes something else
What does malus mean?
How Aristotle described change
What four things did Aristotle observe?
- the physical world was constantly in a state of motion and change
- the planets seemed to be moving eternally
-Change or motion is always created by something
-Objects in the physical world where in a stale of actuality and potentiality
What was Aristotles prime mover?
how Aristotle used reasoning to explain constant change, believing he prime mover created change as everything is drawn to it which means it allows things to reach actuality (purpose)
