Arguments on the Existences of God Flashcards
First Cause Argument (general)
aka the cosmological argument
Thomas Aquinas
Everything has a cause, and since we can’t cause ourselves, something had to cause us. There must be something first, because Aquinas doesn’t like the idea of the infinite series. The first cause must have been God.
First Cause Argument rules
- Everything that exists had a cause of its coming int o existence.
- Nothing can be the cause of itself.
- There cannot be an infinite series of casual chains.
- Therefore, there had to be a first cause.
- The first cause must be God
First Cause Argument counter arguments
If everything has a cause, then there must be a cause for God.
First cause might not be God, might be Big Bang. The first cause might not exist anymore.
Argument for Design (general)
aka the Tteleological argument
William Paley
God is the watchmaker
All of this can’t be chance, there had to be a designer that put it all together perfectly
ex. throwing watch parts in the air won’t make a watch, it has to be carefully assembled
Argument for Design counter arguments
Evolutionary theory
like soup, something related when there’s a random mix of things
Things really aren’t that perfect, there are a lot of problems
