Arguments for the existence of God Flashcards
What is the cosmological argument?
-Everything in the universe is contingent
-Everything that has ever existed cannot be contingent because that would lead to an infinite regress, which is absurd
-means there has to be a necessary being started this chain of contingency
-This necessary being is God
-Therefore, God exist
What is Russell’s criticism’s of the cosmological argument?
The Fallacy of composition- what is true of the parts in not necessarily true of the whole , just because what we see in the world is caused, it does not mean that the universe itself has a cause
-universe is a brute fact- the existence of the universe is simply un explainable
What is Hume’s criticism for the cosmological argument?
-argued for the existence of infinite regress: it can reasonably be asked what caused God, argued that nothing can be said about the nature of God as a necessarily-existent being
