Arguments Flashcards
What is an argument?
seeking to persuade somebody of your view
trying to get across one big idea (the conclusion) supported by a number of propositions (premises)
What is the difference between a inductive argument and a deductive argument?
deductive argument is a proof - if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true
a inductive argument is made up of premises that are open, there are a number of conclusion that could be true
What is a posteriori argument and a priori argument
a posteriori argument is an argument based on evidence which already exists - POST evidence
a priori argument is an argument that does not depend on evidence but on reason alone - prior to evidence
What is synthetic and analytic arguments?
synthetic arguments depends on something else for its existence - it could be false
analytic arguments are true by definition
What is the difference between necessary and contingent?
Necessary does not depend on anything else to be true - to deny it would be a contradiction
Contingent is the truth that can only be determined by observation
