analogy
opposite or contracting statements accentuated by their parallel structure
antithesis
quoting from a source which is known to be knowledgeable or expert
appeal to authority
a statement made by the writer for consideration as true
assertion
to take a stand in support of something

to argue against; to use evidence to prove wrong
refute
a statement which may appear to be an argument but is not logical and may be misleading
fallacy
the opinion ofhte writer; stand or stance he/she takes on the issue

final opposition to an assertion; refutation
rebuttal
using spoken or ritten communication to persuade; also used as a broad term for nonfiction
rhetoric
reasoning that assumes a general principle (major premise) and applies that to a specific application (minor premise)
Major premise: I am allergic to cats
Minor premise: Fluffy is a cat
Conclusion: I am allergic to Fluffy
deduction
making a generalization based on numerous facts
everyt time I peta cat, I have an allergic reaction. I must be allergic to cats
induction
deduction with a major and minor premise accepted, which then grants a conclusion
syllogism
