Argument Against Churchills View Flashcards
What was Churchills view
Analysis of Churchills view of Britian going to war in 1938 shows the flaws
Why were Allies a problem for Churchill’s view ?
If Britian had gone to war who would their Allie’s have been if they hadn’t discussed with any major power for a coalition
What posed problem for Churchill with Britian forces ?
Did not have a high readiness expeditionary force for quick deployment
Many of its forces were also tied down in the empire
Why did Japan and Italy pose a problem for Churchills view?
Had to be taken into account
- they may take advantage of Britian and it’s vital interests such as Egypt and the Suez Canal and India, south east Asia and India hard to defend
- Churchill unaware of this vulnerability
What was a problem for Churchill with the Soviet Union ?
WSC had been hostile to communism and the Bolshevists meaning a strong alliance between Soviet Union and Britian would be difficult to achieve
What was the issue of France ?
Britain consistently stopped French action but by 1938 not plan for a joint attack on Germany
French opinion opposed to any action that could repeat heavy WW1 losses
Heavy defence Maginot Line not a means of attacking Germany or saving Czechs
What was the issue of the smaller European nations ?
Not have been militarised effectively even if Britian joined with them
- little support
What was the opinion of USA and why was this an issue ?
Favoured isolationism and the Neautrality Acts passed by Congress prevented supplying other countries engaged in war let alone join them
USA was far more concerned with Japan and the Pacific not Europe
Why was Churchills enthusiasm with the League of Nations an issue ?
It had proved ineffective in preventing aggression since 1931
