Note:
Uco Valley is shaped like an east facing banana.
– Tupungato is the northernmost Department (named after the famous and very noticeable peak). Since these vineyards are southeast facing they don’t get much direct sunlight. The wines are more tannicly structured and higher in acid.
– San Carlos is the southernmost Department. Its vineyards are northeast facing, so they get direct sunshine in the morning and throughout the day. They are the fleshiest and ripest in Uco.
– Tunuyan being directly east facing is a nice balance between the two.
As a rough comparison, think of it like the regions of Rioja, Spain:
Tupungato = Rioja Alta
Tunuyan = Rioja Alavesa
San Carlos = Rioja Baja
