Room where actors and technicians wait for their next cue
Greenroom
“Picture frame” of the stage. The opening between the stage and the audience
Proscenium Arch
Acting area between the proscenium arch and the front of the stage
Apron
Area in front of the stage or under the apron where the musicians play for a musical
Orchestra pit
Imaginary wall that separates a play from the audience
Fourth Wall
System used to raise and lower all the battens
Fly system
Offstage areas not seen by audience - to side of the acting area
Wings
Path you take backstage without the audience seeing you
Crossover space
Collection of wings and crossover space; all areas not intended to be seen by the audience
Backstage
Any items hung in one place so they don’t move
Dead-hung
Pipes that span the width of the stage and are used to hang curtains, backdrops, and cycloramas
Batten
A large piece of muslin or canvas hung at the back of the stage setting, often featuring a painted scene
Backdrop
A circuited batten or pipe that has been electrified for the use of powering and holding lighting equipment
Electric
Short, wide, black curtains that change the height of the stage opening and hide lights and battens
Borders
Tall, thin, black curtains hung in pairs SR and SL parallel to the grand curtain that hide the wings
Legs
Legs that rotate
Roto-drapes
Main close-able curtain at the front of the stage that is a heavier weight and different color from the other curtains
Grand curtain
Front border same color and weight as the grand curtain
Grand valence
The black closeable curtain at the middle of the stage
Mid-stage
The black full-stage curtain at the back of the stage
Back black
White or light blue backdrop that is used to replicate the sky
Cyclorama (cyc)
Loosely woven fabric that is transparent when lit from behind and opaque when lit from the front
Scrim
All of the fabric hanging on stage
Soft Goods
Safety light that is turned on before everyone leaves the theater
Ghost Light
To take apart a set, clear dressing rooms, store sound equipment, reset lights to a general wash after a show closes
Strike
The most important person on the crew of any show. Calls cues and runs the show on opening
