Area Flashcards
What is a quadrilateral?
A four sided figure.
What is a square?
A quadrilateral with all 4 sides EQUAL IN LENGTH.
What does PARALLEL mean?
Two lines or sides or a figure are the same distance from each other at all points….if they go on and on they will never touch each other.
What is a rectangle?
A Four sided figure with OPPOSITE SIDES EQUAL IN LENGTH AND PARALLEL.
What is a parallelogram?
A figure with four sides and OPPOSITE SIDES ARE PARALLEL.
What is the area of a rectangle or square?
Area = Length X Width.
Length is long side and width is short side. For a square they are the same!
Units of area are always squared.
What does Divide it by two mean?
Split it in half. Example: half of 4 is 2.
What is a triangle?
A figure with 3 sides. It is HALF of a parallelogram.
How do you find the area of a triangle?
Two ways: 1. Base x Height divided by 2 OR if possible rearrange or draw a parallelogram, find the area of the parallelogram and divide it by 2.
How do you find the area of an irregularly shaped parallelogram?
two ways: 1. rearrange its shape or 2. Length x Height
How do you find the area if an oddly shaped figure?
Split it up into figures you can find the area of and ADD the areas together. OR you might have to subtract an unshaded area from the larger shaded + unshaded area.
Things to remember:
- Ignore unnecessary numbers on the figure.
- Make sure you have the measurement of a side correct…watch out for the tricks when only a part of the side is marked with a measurement.
3.If you are stuck try to remember a problem you did before that looks like that one. - Only if you have left over time check your work.
- USE your calculator.
