Q

what are some assumptions made in the kinetic model for ideal gases?

A
  • gas contains a very large number of atoms moving in random directions with random directions with random speeds
  • the atoms of gas negligible volume compared with the volume of the gas
  • the collision of atoms with each other and the container walls are perfectly elastic
  • the time of collision between the atoms is negligible compared to the time between the collsions
  • no electrostatic forces

Q

how is the root mean square speed determined?

A
  • the root mean square speed is determined by summing he square of all of the individual velocities of molecules, dividing by the number of molecules,N, and then finding the square root of this value.

Q

assumption about internal energy in ideal gases?

A
  • since the electrostatic forces between particles in the gas are negligible except during collisions
  • this means there is no electrical potential energy in an ideal gas.
  • all the internal energy is in the form of the kinetic energy of the particle.

Q

why is there so little helium in the air? compared to oxygen?

A
  • they have different masses and therefore their r.m.s speeds will be different.
  • since helium atoms have a very small mass, which in turns means higher r.m.s speeds.
  • overtime these faster-moving helium atoms have escaped from the earth atmosphere
