Why do you use bronze in sculptures
More freedom as they originally modelled by wax. Unlike stone , bronze enables extended Limbs as of it high tensile strength. High polished surface which emphasises the light, visual impact, subject. ( and the fluid lines of the figure). Finally it gives off a precious status due to the expense of the material.
Why produce a bronze sculptor
High tensile strength allows open composition with protuding limbs. Features some of its original techniques : plaster and day. The modelling creates a smoother shape for its limbs. It can be exhibited outside as the bronze is tough and durable.
The monumentality is emphasised by the patina an mass (scale)of the figure.
Why choose gilding on bronze
Unified scene.
Low relief.
Light and shadows enhanced.
What does contrapposto
All weight on one leg
Why use white marble on sculptures
Unifies figures. Associated with: nobility , heroism and status.
Relatively Soft to carve allowing detail.
Undercutting creates: greater dramatic intensity
Why marble is no good
Low tensile strength can cause damage to the sculptor. Closed composition.
When miltiple blocks are used, some cracks appear on the joints.
