What is an archetype?
An original pattern from which copies are made.
The hero
Usually the main character. He/she learns something from the story.
Follows a common pattern.
The Hero - Common Patterns
- born under unusual circumstances
- is the son/daughter of a king or god
- marked for greatness
- must prove royal claim by test or trial
Types of hero
Primitive - often slays monsters
Warrior - fights for a cause or personal glory
Unwilling - full of doubts, needs to be motivated
Anti-hero - may be outlaw, villain, rebel
Tragic - flawed, never overcomes inner demons
Mentor
Wise old man. Trains the hero.
Trickster
- may cause problems, but doesn’t mean to hurt the hero
Shadow
- the hero’s sworn enemy
Shape shifter
Someone who seeks to destroy the hero or keep them from their mission
Helpers/Herald
Hero’s sidekick
Threshold Guardian
Provides test for the hero to prove their worth
Good Mother
Provides protection, warmth, nourishment.
Father Figure
Represents what the hero wants to be.
