Archbishops Flashcards
Who was the first Archbishop?
Matthew Parker
1559-75
What issues did Parker face?
1563 oversaw 39 articles, refused to give way to more extreme demands. despite only being defeated by 1 vote they were never able to muster enough support again
Vestments-1566 issued advertisements telling clergy to accept some uniformity in practice
How was Parker helpful?
Put Elizabethan church in firm foothold
worked well with Elizabeth
prevented radicals from gaining enough support in convocation ever again
took responsibilities of vestment issue so E’s reputation not damaged
strength of partnership demonstrated in success of church in early years, remained in office till his death
How was Parker not helpful?
He was married + defended clerical marriage-E expressed dislike of Clergy marriage
Puritan opposition gained strength from vestment controversy, would cause trouble in future
E concerned RS not being properly observed in some areas outside London, blamed Parker for not ensuring Act of Uniformity was properly enforced
Who was the second archibishop?
Edmund Grindal
1575-83
How was Grindal helpful?
despite having sympathy with Puritan criticisms of Church, he didn’t agree with their tactics + believed uniformity should be maintained
How was Grindal not helpful?
Had puritan sympathies, attempts to move Church in more Puritan direction irritated E
E ordered Grindal to supress the prophesyings, but he agreed with them eg thought they were a good way of educating people in the doctrine of the new faith. Sent E a letter defending prophesyings, she was outraged, didn’t tolerate disobedience suspended for 6 months, died before he could resign
Role in helping E was minimal, situation brought discredit to Elizabethan church
Who was the third Archbishop?
John Whitgift
1575-1604
How did Whitgift help with religion?
unmarried, got on well with E
worked hard to protect church from Catholics
1570, when Cartwright gave lectures, Whitgift ensured he was removed from professorship
