Aqueous Reactions Flashcards
What is a neutralization reaction?
Reactions where the acid and base neutralize each other’s properties. “Acid Base Reaction”
What is an acid?
Anything that DONATES a proton
What is a base?
Anything that ACCEPTS a proton
What is titration?
The process of finding a solution’s concentration by reacting it w/ another material & using stoichiometry
Moles of H+ and Moles of OH- at endpoint
Equal to each other (or equivalence point)
H2CO3
H20 (l) + CO2 (g)
H2SO3
H20 (l) + SO2 (g)
NH4OH
H20 (l) + NH3 (g)
What are oxidation-reduction reactions
Reactions that involve the transferring of electrons from one atom to another. “Redox reactions”. Many involve reaction of x with O2 (g)
Examples of reactions involving exchange of ions in solution
1) acid base reactions 2) precipitation 3) gas evolving
What happens with electrons in a “oxidation”
OIL (oxidation is loss)
What happens with electrons in a “reduction”
RIG (reaction is gain)
oxidation # of FREE elements
zero
oxidation # of monatonic ions
charge of the ion (ex: Na = +1)
oxidation # of H
+1
