Aqueous Chemistry Flashcards
Strong Acids
HCl HNO3 (Strongest Acid)
HBr H2SO4
HI
HClO3
HClO4
Acid
Is a substance that produces H+ ions when dissolved in H2O.
Weak Acids
HF
H2CO3
HC2H3O2
Don’t dissociate
Base
Is a substance that produces OH- ions when dissolved in H2O.
Strong bases
LiOH FrOH NaOH Ca(OH)2 KOH Sr(OH)2 CsOH Ba(OH)2 RbOH Ra(OH)2
Weak bases
Be(OH)2
Mg(OH )2
NH3
Don’t dissociate
Dissociation
The initial compound/substance given is broken up by water into its separate ionic aqueous forms.
Na2SO4(s) ——-> 2Na+ (aq) + SO4^2- (aq)
Salt
Substance that contains an anion from an acid & a cation from a base, H2O will always be the last product.
Strong Vs. Weak Acids and bases
The strong dissociate unlike the weak ones.
Precipitation Rxns
When most aqueous reactions form insoluble precipitates, or solids in the solution.
Neutralization Rxns
Occurs when an acid reacts with a base to produce a salt & water.
Gas Neutralization Rxns
Carbonates react with acids to form carbon dioxide gas. Reactions with first form carbonic acid. Will produce H2O and CO2
Oxidation Numbers
Equals 0 unless it has a shown charge at the end, the it will equal to the amount of the charge.
Reducing Agent & Oxidizing Agent
Reducing Agent: Loses electrons (+)
Oxidizing Agent: gains or stabilizes with electrons (-)
