Aqueous and vitreous humour Flashcards
What is aqueous humor? Where is it located? Is it more or less dense than water?
Ultrafiltrate of plasma
Anterior eye
More dense
Where is aqueous humor produced?
Ciliary body
Where is aqueous humor drained?
Idiocorneal angle (anterior ciliary body, iris and cornoscleral junction)
What is the function of the aqueous humour?
Provide nutrition to lens and cornea
Maintain intraocular perssure
Constant production and drainage of aqueous humor is required to maintain intraocular pressure. What is the IOP in a dog?
15-25mmHg
What is the function of maintaining IOP?
Maintains position of eye
Health of structures
Rigidity of globe
What is glaucoma?
Production of aqueous humour exceeds drainage
What are the 3 processes that produce aqueous humour?
Diffusion
Ultrafiltration
Active secretion
What causes each phase of aqueous humor production?
Diffusion due to different solutes
Ultrafiltration due to different HSP of IOP and ciliary body capillaries
Active secretion due to active transport of sodium by ciliary epithelium
What is the most important factor for active secretion of aqueous humor?
Osmolarity between HSP and plasma
Should be similar
What can be used to treat glaucoma and why?
Bicarbonate
Affects sodium movement - active transport of sodium required for active secretion of aqueous humor
What causes aqueous humor to circulate? What is this type of circulation called?
Temperature differences
Thermal circulation
What is uveoscleral outflow?
Unconventional pathway of aqueous flow
Bypass aqueous plexus
Which species may have uveoscleral outflow?
Often horses
Sometimes in cats/dogs
What is vitreous humor? Where is it found?
Gel like substance in posterior eye (between lens and retina)
