Aquaculture Flashcards
Aeration
adding oxygen to the water
ex. mechanical aeration
anadromous
fish that are born in freshwater
aquaculture
the cultivation of plants and animals in all types of water environments including ponds, rivers, lakes, oceans, and land-based facilities.
concentrated aquatic animal production(CAAP)
it’s another way to describe aquaculture production
crustaceans
a very large group of arthropods with more than 67,000 species.
dissolved oxygen(DO)
the amount of gaseous oxygen that’s dissolved in the water.
fingerling
small, young fish that are under one year.
fishery
an aquaculture operation or the practice of aquaculture
freshwater aquaculture
the production of aquatic life that is native to rivers, lakes, and streams, or spends the majority of its life in freshwater.
fry
young fish that are ready to eat on their own.
hatchery
an aquaculture production facility focused on breeding, nursing, and rearing fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants to fry fingerlings or juvenile stages.
intensive recirculating aquaculture system(IRAS)
an aquaculture system that filters water from the tanks so that it can be reused within the tanks.
mariculture
the farming of marine organisms
marine aquaculture
production of species of aquatic plants and animals that live in the ocean(saltwater).
marine cage
aquaculture enclosers with rigid frames on all sides. these cages are suspended in a body of water. it also allows water to pass freely between the fish and surrounding water resource.
