AQA AS Materials Flashcards
Hooke’s Law
Force directly proportional to extension, up to the limit of proportionality.
Stress
This is the force per unit cross-sectional area.
Strain
Extension divided by its original length
Young’s Modulus
This is the ratio between stress and strain
Elastic Limit
The limit of proportionality past which there is plastic deformation.
Yield Point
The stress beyond which a material becomes plastic.
Elastic Deformation
This means that the object will return to its original shape when the deforming force is removed.
Plastic Deformation
Doesn’t return to original length permanent deformation / permanent extension.
Breaking stress
This is the maximum tensile (stretching) force that can be applied to an object before it breaks.
