Absolute Ruler
a ruler who holds complete power within a country, similar to a monarch
Aristocracy
a government where the neither rich nor poor daily citizens of the state, also known as the nobility, hold power
Bureaucracy
a government system where state officials make the most crucial decisions, not the elected officials; contains a hierarchical structure and specific responsibilities for each level
Chiefdom
a society run under a chief’s authority and relies on generosity and charisma from the chief rather than force to gain the people’s obedience
Civilization
a human society with an advanced social development and containing specific characteristics of technological and cultural development
Colonialism
a stronger country maintains control and domination over a weaker country in multiple ways, resulting in the stronger country gaining the weaker country’s resources
Democracy
a government run by the people of the country, usually through elected representatives
Demography
the study of dynamics within populations, providing evidence for trends throughout history
Diaspora
all types of movement from a population’s citizens sharing the same ethnic descent
Dynasty
a succession of sovereigns from a country all apart of one family or a common ancestor
Empire
a group of countries or states brought together under one supreme authority
Epidemic
a disease is spread rapid that completely devastates a population for a usually short period of time
Feudalism
a form of political organization involving a political, economic, and social hierarchy to organize land, work, and people’s roles within society; a monarch is at the top of this hierarchy
Imperialism
policy of extending a country’s power and influence by taking over another country and or territory through diplomacy or military force and dominating the political, economic, and social characteristics of the nation being taken over
Interregional
permanent movement within the same country from one region to another
Kingdom
community that is politically organized and has a monarchical government structure headed by a king or queen
Medieval
time period of “the Middle Ages”, between the Roman empire and the Renaissance; began with the Western Roman Empire’s collapse and later became the Renaissance and Age of Discovery
Merchant
a person who takes part in wholesale trade by buying and selling items for profit, and usually deals with foreign countries and supplying merchandise
Monotheism
the belief that there is only one god or deity
Nation
a cultural or ethnic area in which inhabitants share similar culture and or beliefs but may not have a country of its own
Nomad
member of a group or tribe that constantly moves from place to place instead of settling down in a single place and live with livestock or by hunting and gathering
Patriarchal
a social organization where a male is in complete control of all aspects of life, including over family and their wife
Polytheism
the belief that there is more than one god or deity
Prehistoric
the time period before record history or writing systems had been created
