Louisiana Purchase
Large portion of land that was purchased by Jefferson from the French (Napoleon), for $15 million in 1803.
The 2nd Great Awakening
Series of religious revivals that mainly focused on personal religious experience and Utopian communities. Also triggered the Antebellum Reform Movement.
Antebellum Reform Movement
A series of movements inspired by the 2nd Great Awakenings ideal (better the community, make an impact) like temperance, abolition (Lyman Beecher), education, prison reforms, insane asylums, etc.
Judicial Review
The ability of the Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS) t determine constitutionality
The War of 1812
Conflict between the US and GB over trade and impressment. Great lakes were shaped with US and Canada.
Adams-Onis Treaty
A treaty that allowed the US to buy Florida from Spain.
Market Revolution
turning point in US industry and production. (railroads, canals, steamboats, etc. making things QUICKER which resulted in more PROFIT)
Tariff of Abominations
A protective tariffthat was passed to support early growing domestic industries by raising costs of imported goods. This led to the Nullification crisis.
Nullification crisis
whether individual states had the right to nullify or reject federal laws within their boundaries.
Monroe Doctrine
Made by James Monroe; a Doctrine that warned European nations that the US would not tolerate further colonization.
Lewis and Clark
tasked with exploring land that the United States had recently acquired (the Louisiana Purchase)
embargo act
1807,closed U.S. ports to all exports and restricted imports from Britain, response to British and French interference with neutral U.S. merchant ships during the Napoleonic Wars.
the compromise of 1850
a series of measures proposed by U.S. Senator Henry Clay and passed by the U.S. Congress to settle several issues connected to slavery and avert the threat of dissolution of the Union
the fugitive slave law
The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was part of the Compromise of 1850. The act required that slaves be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state.
