Why was Cortez successful at defeating the Aztec empire?
Cortes had two people who knew Mayan, one of them also knew Nahuatl, used them to get information on the Aztec. Montezuma, the Aztec chief sent him gifts but that only made Cortes want to take over even more. Montezuma allows Spanish troops to approach his capital without a threat, but the Spanish made it clear they wanted power. On June 30, 1520, on “Noche Triste”, the Aztecs attacked the Spaniards, so the Spaniards led siege causing the Aztecs to surrender.
