William Bradford
A pilgrim, second governor of the Plymouth colony 1621-1657. He developed private land ownership and led the pilgrims through drought, crop failure, and Indian attacks.
Pilgrims and Puritans contrasted
Pilgrims were separatists who wanted to be free from the Anglican Church because they didn’t believe it could be changed so they fled. Puritans believed that the Church of England could be changed and went to the Americas to set up the perfect church.
Massachusetts Bay colony
1629- King Charles gave puritans the right to settle and govern this colony in America. Established political freedom and a representative government.
Puritan migration
Many puritans moved to Massachusetts between 1630-1640 and the colony grew 10 times its size.
Anne Hutchinson,
Antinomianism
She believed that God communicated directly to the individual and not through church elders and was banished from Massachusetts for her “heresies” and she founded the New Hampshire colony in 1639
Roger Williams, Rhode Island
1635- he left Massachusetts looking for religious freedom and purchased land from an Indian tribe so he could start his own colony, Rhode Island, that offered religious freedom.
Half-way covenant
Allowed those who weren’t full embers of the Puritan church, to participate in some church events.
Thomas Hooker
Clergyman, called father of American democracy, because he said people had right to choose church leaders.
Fundamental orders of Connecticut
First constitution written in America. Set up local government for towns.
New England confederation
1643- formed to provide defense for the four New England area colonies.
King Phillips war
Indian chief, King Phillip, who waged war on New Hampshires colonists. Started when colonists tried to put Indians under their control. Colonists won.
Dominion of New England
1686- British government combined the northern colonies so they could be ruled under one governor, Andros. 1692 colonists revolted against Andros because he was a douche.
Virginia
Purpose- wanted to find profits like the Spanish had found in Mexico.
Problems- the natives fought them a lot and the people starved.
Went bankrupt
Successes- they had created a staple crop of tobacco under John Rolfe, and captain John smith had helped the colonists survive under his rule.
Head right system
Groupings of 50 acre plots of land that brought indentured servants to the colony and others
What happened in 1619?
Slavery began in Virginia, and the Virginia house of burgesses formed and would be the first legislative body in America
