April 19th Flashcards
Water vapor
I gas in the earths atmosphere
Ice cap
A thick sheet of ice covering a large area of land
Soil water
Water that soaks into the ground
Groundwater
Water stored in the cracks of underground rocks
Evaporation
The process in which water particles change from a liquid to a gas
Condensation
The process in which water particles change from a gas to a liquid
Cloud
A mass of tiny droplets of condensed water in atmosphere
Precipitation
Water in the atmosphere that falls to earth as rain, snow, hail or sleet.
Freeze
The process which moving particles in water slow down, Lose heat and change from a liquid to a solid
Melt
When water particles absorb heat energy and change from a solid to a liquid
Water cycle
The continuous movement of water between the earths surface and the air changing from a liquid to a gas to a liquid
Irrigation
A way to get water into the soil by artificial means
Water treatment plant
TA place where water is made clean and pure
Filtration
The passing of a liquid through materials that remove impurities
Sewage
Water mixed with waste
Septic tank
An underground tank in which sewage is broken down by bacteria
Water conservation
The use of water saving methods
Give an example of where water is found as a liquid solid and gas
Water is found as a liquid in rivers lakes in the ocean. As a solid and ice caps and glaciers and icebergs. As a gas and water vapor
Name three ways you can conserve water at home
Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth, put a brick in the toilet tank run full loads of laundry
Atmosphere
The blanket of gases that surrounds the earth
Give two examples of how water move from one place to another in the water cycle. Explain how water changes state in each example
Water moves from the ground into the air liquid to a gas water moves from the air to the ground gas to a liquid
After you clean the dishes what happens to the water you just used? Where does the water go and how does it change?
These water goes to the sewer. The water is treated and cleaned and then returns to the Ohio River
Describe the water cycle using our science vocabulary.
The suns energy causes water to evaporate and turn into water vapor. The water vapor condenses and becomes a cloud. The cloud becomes full and drops fall to the ground as precipitation.
