Approaches In Psychology Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Consists of the brain and spinal cord
Endocrine System
The system which affects the transfer and secretion of hormones into the body
Genotype
The genetic make up of an individual
Hormones
The chemicals secreted by the endocrine System into the blood and other bodily fluids
Introspection
A technique by Wundt to gain an insight into how the mental processes work, people were trained to report in detail on their inner experiences when presented with a stimulus such as a problem to be solved
Negative reinforcement
Trying to avoid a bad consequence from happening
Neuron
A merger cell which transfers information throughout the nervous system
Neurotransmitter
Chemicals within the cerebral fluid that transmit signals
Operant conditioning
Learning due to the positive or negative reinforcement of the behaviour
Peripheral Nervous system
System accompanying the Central Nervous System that runs throughout the body
Phenotype
Characteristics shown by a person that have formed from their genes and environment combined
Positive reinforcement
Behaviour is more likely to happen if it has been positively reinforced because of positive consequences
Schema
A collection of ideas about a person or situation formed through experience which helps individuals to understand and predict the world around them
Stimulus discrimination
When a stimulus is not associated because it is too different from the other stimuli
Stimulus generalisation
When a stimulus becomes generalised to other related stimuli which are associated with the conditioned response
