Q

Well controlled research and CP

A

STRENGTH
-focus on the measurement of observable behaviour within highly controlled lab settings
-break down behaviour into basic stimulus and response units, removing extraneous variables and allowing cause and effect.
-have scientific creditability
-has good reliability as experiments can be replicated
CP
-oversimplify learning process
-reducing behaviour to simple components and ignoring importance of mental processes
-learning is more complex than observable behaviour
-lacks validity as it ignores all human processes.

Q

Real-world application (BA)

A

STRENGTH
-OC basis of token economy systems used in prisons and psychiatric wards. Rewarding behaviour with tokens which give priviledges
-CC applied to treat phobias such as systematic desensitisation
-increases value as it has widespread application
-has validity

Q

Environmental Determinism

A

LIMITATION
-sees behaviour as conditioned by past conditioning experiences
-Ignores the possible influence that free will may have on behaviour
-belief that behaviour is caused by features of the environment we cannot control
-extreme and ignores the influence of conscious decision making
-limited fails to consider on individual’s free will.

Q

Cognitive factors and CP

A

STRENGTH
-CC + OC cannot offer adequate account of learning
-humans store information about behaviour of others and use this to make judgements about when it is appropriate to perform certain tasks
-SLT provides comprehensive explanation of human learning
- increases validity
CP
-SLT criticised for making too little reference to biological factors
- Recent research suggests that observational learning may be the result of mirror neurons which allow us to empathize and imitate other people
-biological influences on social learning are under emphasised
-SLT is limited

Q

Contrived lab studies

A

LIMITATION
-Bandura’s ideas were developed through observation of young children’s behaviour in the lab
-contived nature where pps may respond to demand characteristics
-children were simply behaving in a way that they thought was expected
-decreases the reliability and validity of SLT

Q

Real-world application(SLT)

A

STRENGTH
-applied to a rang of real world behaviours such as cultural differences in behaviours
-explains how cultural norms are transmitted

-increases value
-SLT has real life application

Q

Real world application and CP (PA)

A

STRENGTH
-introduced idea of psychotherapy
-Freud introduced psychoanalysis. First attempt to treat mental disorders psychologically
-range of techniques to access the unconscious mind
-brought repressed emotions into their conscious mind to be dealt with
-valuable as it created new approach to treatment
-has creditability
CP
-Psychoanalysis is regarded as inappropriate even harmful for people experiencing more serious mental disorders.
-SZ= paranoia and delusional thinking so cannot articulate their thoughts
-may not apply to all mental disorders
- cannot be used in real life and lacks validity as it fails to treat every mental illness

Q

Explanatory power

A

STRENGTH
-ability to explain human behaviour
-huge influence on psychology and the western contemporary thought.
-alongside behaviourism, psychodynamic remained a key force of the 20th century
-used to explain phenomena- personality development, abnormal behaviour, moral development and gender identity
-positive impact on psychology and also literature, art and other human endeavours
-has validity as it can be applied beyond the psychology discipline

Q

Untestable concepts

A

Limitation
-Popper argues that the psychodynamic approach does not meet the scientific criteria of falsification
-not open to empirical testing and cannot be disproved
-Freud’s concepts occur at the unconscious level so it is difficult or impossible to test
-ideas are based on a subjective study
-pseudoscientific (not real science)
-unreliable as concepts cannot be tested

Q

Holism and CP

A

STRENGTH
-rejects attempts to break up behaviour and experience into smaller components (reductionism)
-Behaviourism explain learning in terms of simple stimulus- response connections
Biological psyc reduce behaviour to its basic physiological processes
-Humanistic advocate holism- the idea that subjective experience can only be understood by considering the whole person
-validity than others as it consider meaningful human behaviour within its real world context
-good validity through subjective experiences it treats individuals
CP
-reductionist approaches are more scientific
-idea of science is the experiment and experiment reduce behaviour to independent and dependent variables.
-HA few concepts can be broken down to single variables
- unscientific as concepts such as self actualization cannot be measured

Q

Positive approach

A

STRENGTH
-optimistic
-praised for promoting a positive image of the human condition
-Freud saw human beings as prisoners of their past
-in contrast humanistic psychologists see all people as basically good, free to work towards the achievement of their potential and in control of their lives
-offers a refreshing and optimistic alternative
- high credibility as it gives people hope

Q

Cultural bias

A

LIMITATION
-culturally biased
-many ideas such as individual freedom, autonomy and personal growth is associated with individualistic cultures- priorities individual success
-on the other hand collectivist cultures emphasise the needs of group, community and interdependence- e.g many Asian cultures
-such cultures may not identify with the ideal and values of the HA
-this approach cannot be applied universally
-limited fails to apply to all types of community

17
Q

What are the 3 AO3 of the Cognitive approach

A
  1. Scientific methods and CP
    2.Real world application
  2. Machine reductionism
18
Q

Scientific methods and CP (CA)

A

STRENGTH
-uses objective and scientific methods
-cognitive psychologists employ highly controlled and rigorous methods
-lab studies to produce reliable objective data
-cognitive neuroscience combined biology and cognitive psyc to enhance the scientific basis of study
-study of the mind has a credible scientific basis
-increases the validity of CA
CP
-cognitive psychology’s reliance on inference of mental processes rather than direct observation of behaviour is too abstract and theoretical in nature
- Research studies of mental processes are often carried using artificial stimuli that may not represent everyday experience
-research on cognitive processes may lack external validity
-limited

19
Q

Real world application (CA)

A

STRENGTH
-practical application
-dominant approach in psyc today and has been applied widely
- made an important contribution in the field of artificial intelligence and the development of “thinking machines”
-used to treat depression through cognitive behavioral therapy
-supports the value of CA
-has real life application and the ability to improve mental health

20
Q

Machine reductionism

A

LIMITATION
-based on machine reductionism
-human behaviour is explained in terms of a machine
-CA suggests that there are similarities between the human mind and the operations of a computer(input, process, storage, central processor)
-computer analogy ignores the influence of human emotion and motivation on the cognitive system and how it affects the ability to process info.
-machine reductionism may weaken the validity of the cognitive approach
-lacks validity fails to account for human emotion

21
Q

What are the 3 AO3 of the Biological approach

A
  1. Real world application and CP
    2.Scientific methods
  2. Biological determinism
22
Q

Real-world application and CP (BiA)

A

STRENGTH
-has real life application
-increased understanding of neurochemical processes in the brain is associated with the use of psychoactive drugs to treat mental disorders
-promoted the treatment of clinical depression using antidepressant drugs that increase levels of serotonin in the brain
- such drugs have been associated with the reduction of depressive symptoms
-people with depression may be better bale to manage their condition and live a relatively normal life
-has validity as it improves lifestyle of those with mental illnesses
CP
-antidepressants do not work for everyone
- research has found wide variations in their effectiveness
-drugs were more effective than placebos, the effect of antidepressants were uncertain
-challenges the value of BA as it suggests that the brain chemistry alone may not account for all cases such as depression
-research into neurochemistry in BiA lacks credibility due to the side effects it can cause

23
Q

Scientific methods (BiA)

A

STRENGTH
-uses scientific methods of investigation
-uses a variety of methods for precise and objective methods to study Genetics and Biological basis of behaviour
-uses a range of precise and highly objective methods - fMRIs and EEGs
-with advanced technology it is possible to accurately measure physiological and neural processes in ways that are not subjective
-much of BiA is based on objective and reliable data
- scientific approach due to the methods used
