Approaches Flashcards
O o P-
One strength?
SCIENTIFIC. Controlled environment.
MODERN PSYCHOLOGY. Same aims as natural science,
O o P-
Two limitations?
SUBJECTIVE DATA. Self report of mental processes.
SUBJECTIVE DATA. Not all use objective methods, humanistic (rejects science), psychodynamic (uses case studies), demand characteristics.
The behaviourist approach-
Two strengths?
WELL CONTROLLED. Focuses on the measure of observable behaviour, stimulus response units, allowing cause and effect.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION. Token economies, use din prisons and wards.
The behaviourist approach-
One limitation?
ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINISM. Skinner- behaviour is all due to reinforcement history, no free will.
The social learning theory-
Two strengths?
COGNITIVE FACTORS. Use observed behaviours to make our own guide, not only observed behaviours.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION. Explains cultural differences in behaviour.
The social learning theory-
One limitation?
CONTRIVED LAB STUDIES. Demand characteristics.
The cognitive approach-
Two strengths?
SCIENTIFIC METHOS. Highly controlled lab studies.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION. Important in AI, robots and the treatment of depression.
The cognitive approach-
One limitation?
MACHINE REDUCTIONIST. Ignores emotion and human motivation.
The biological approach-
Two strengths?
REAL WORLD APPLICATION. Antidepressants. SSRI.
SCIENTIFIC METHODS. Use of high objective methods, fMRI EEGs.
The biological approach-
One limitation?
BIOLOGICAL DETERMINISM. No control, no nurture,
The psychodynamic approach-
Two strengths?
REAL WORLD APPLICATION. Created psychoanalysis, first attempt to mentally treat mental disorders.
EXPLANATORY POWER. Influence on psychology and contempt y thought. Used to explain things.
The psychodynamic approach-
One limitation?
UNTESTABLE CONCEPTS. Not open to empirical methods.
The humanistic approach-
Two strengths?
NON REDUCTIONIST. Advocates for holism, like other approaches.
POSITIVE APPROACH. Brings the person back into psychology.
The humanistic approach-
One limitation?
CULTURAL BIAS. Highly individualistic, collectivist would look after the group more.
