Definition and Scope of Sports Medicine
Medical supervision of the competitive and recreational athlete
The provision of appropriate physical exercise and sport(s) for persons who are disabled in any way.
Anything with exercise and sports is sports medicine
Is sports medicine considered a medial specialty?
No
- A distinct body of knowledge must be established defining it as a separate field
- Need to establish practices independent of other specialties
Refers to a chronic injury resulting from excessive repetition of a common activity or performance of an activity to which an individual is unable to tolerate.
Overuse Syndromes
Classification of Sports Injuries to Lower Extremity:
Acute
“Chronic” but improving or having the ability to improve overuse injuries –> still have ability to treat but if progresses like below will need to have further workups
Chronic but not improving or “chronic static” injuries ( after a year)
Acute ______ most likely causes myotendinous junction disruption or avulsion fracture at soft tissue/bone interface
severe trauma
Rule of Three
When running 3 times bodyweight is distributed on the weight-bearing foot
Walking to running
Even minor imbalances are magnified 3 times with running.
