Special/Custom Format
Ctrl + 1 = Format cells
Pick format that’s close + then modify in custom
Custom date format
- Select range –> if it is not already in some sort of date format, grab a format
- Format cells Ctrl + 1
- Select Custom category
- Select format – if selecting date, remove what’s in front to remove regional setting
- Can copy the format and paste in a cell to visualize it
- If you create a custom format, it will show on format cells.
- You’re able to delete a custom format that you have created, not the ones that are built in

Additional customization that can be applied to highlight or find values can be performed through advanced conditional formatting
Where to find conditional formatting?
Home –> under styles tab –> conditional formatting
Conditional formatting on the worksheet:
Select conditional formatting –> manage rules –> show formatting rules for:
- Conditional formatting is dynamic
Conditional formatting and If statements
If you’re creating a formula, the assumption is that it is an IF statement already, and you’re telling what the CONDITION is that needs to be met in order to apply the formatting. You don’t need to use an IF.
Customization can also be applied to:
Templates, styles, colors, fonts and themes
Changing default font
File –> Options –> General
Color schemes and fonts sets can be customized under
Page Layout –> Theme Group –> color or Fonts –> Customize
After you modify colors/fonts/effects, you can save as a new theme
Save current theme
Page layout –> select theme –> save theme
Customize cell
Select cells you want to customize –> Home –> Cell styles (or the style box with options, click the arrow down)
new cell style –> Format – Change the cell style –> Click the style
