Applied v pure research Flashcards
1
Q
Where is knowledge of animal behaviour applied?
A
- Farming (animal production)
- Conservation (zoos and wildflie)
- pest control
- Training (companion, working, entertainment)
> assessing and improving welfare
> designing and refining housing and husbandry
2
Q
What two ways may knowledge be applied?
A
- Applying concepts theories and knowledge [PURE]
> look at underlying theory, what should affect numbers? - Applying behavioural techniques and methods
> Simulate theoretical factors on farm and see if effect is noted [STRATEGIC]
> Change practical management and see effects (purely applied) [APPLIED]
3
Q
Give an exemplar problem with pure, strategic and applied approaches
A
How to minimise stereotypic behaviour in gestating sows
- Neural/physiological correlates of stereotypies/motivational basis eg. foraging and feeding
- Expression of foraging behaviour in different housing environments - relationships between feeding and stereotypies, social effects on stereotypies
- Decrease confinement of getting sows - look at effect/trial new diets in commercial conditions/provide extra forage under commercial conditions
