Applied v pure research Flashcards

1
Q

Where is knowledge of animal behaviour applied?

A
  • Farming (animal production)
  • Conservation (zoos and wildflie)
  • pest control
  • Training (companion, working, entertainment)
    > assessing and improving welfare
    > designing and refining housing and husbandry

Q

What two ways may knowledge be applied?

A
  • Applying concepts theories and knowledge [PURE]
    > look at underlying theory, what should affect numbers?
  • Applying behavioural techniques and methods
    > Simulate theoretical factors on farm and see if effect is noted [STRATEGIC]
    > Change practical management and see effects (purely applied) [APPLIED]

Q

Give an exemplar problem with pure, strategic and applied approaches

A

How to minimise stereotypic behaviour in gestating sows

  1. Neural/physiological correlates of stereotypies/motivational basis eg. foraging and feeding
  2. Expression of foraging behaviour in different housing environments - relationships between feeding and stereotypies, social effects on stereotypies
  3. Decrease confinement of getting sows - look at effect/trial new diets in commercial conditions/provide extra forage under commercial conditions
