What is Balint syndrome?

A

Triad:

  • > simultanagnosia (cant attend to more than one item of a complex scene at a time)
  • > optic ataxia (cant guide reach/point)
  • > occulomotor apraxia (cant voluntarily direct saccades to a visual target)
  • due to BILAT damage to superior parieto-occipital region
  • causes incl carbon monoxide poisoning, watershed infarction, leucodystrophy

What is Gerstmann syndrome?

A

4 symptoms:

  • > Dysgraphia (cant write words)
  • > dyscalculia (cant read/write/comprehend numbers)
  • > finger agnosia (inablility to move/name/touch specific fingers)
  • > left right disorientation

occurs with lesion in DOMINANT parietal lobe (ANGULAR AND SUPRAMARGINAL GYRI)

What is Marchiafava-Bignami disease?

A

Demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum, and adjacent anterior commissure
Seen in alcoholics particularly with RED wine overconsumption.
