Applications of Genomics to Infection Flashcards
Multilocus sequence typing (MLST)
Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) is a widely used system for typing microorganisms by sequence analysis of housekeeping genes. The main advantage of MLST in comparison to other typing techniques is theunambiguity and transferability of sequence data. However, a main disadvantage is the high cost of DNA sequencing.
Illumina technology
Illumina sequencing instruments and reagents support massively parallel sequencing using a proprietary method that detects single bases as they are incorporated into growing DNA strands.
Allows us to piece together how bacteria are related and how they evolved.
