Reuptake inhibitors
Prevents neurotransmitters being absorbed back into nerve cells
Reuptake inhibitors- benefit
Higher levels of neurotransmitters can strengthen circuits in brain to regulate mood
MAOI’s
Prevent breakdown of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine
MAOI blocks the effect of the monoamine oxidase enzyme
Strength of drug treatment
Suppress disabling and life threatening symptoms
Removes individual responsibility
Easy to use
Weakness of drug treatment
Not effective for all
Treats symptoms not cause
Side effects- insomnia and anxiety
Gaining informed consent
Electroconvulsive therapy
- Electrode placed on temple of non-dominant side of brain
- Patient given anaesthetic and muscle relaxant
- Small current lasting half a second passed through the brain
- Electric current produces convulsions
- Repeated 3 times for 4 weeks
ECT strengths
Petrides et al (2005)- 65%-85% of depressed patients had favourable response to ECT
ECT weakness
DOH report (1999)- 30% reported in resulting in permanent fear and anxiety
Only treats symptoms
Severe depression- may not grasp nature and consequence of ECT
