Q

How can we help to maintain attachments between parents and children who are in hospital?

A

It was common place that parents would not be able to visit children in hospital for fear of upsetting them.

We could enable parents to be on hand, either in accommodation close by so that they can see their child for the whole day, or even provide beds in the child’s room to ensure that attachment is maintained.

Q

What way can we encourage an attachment between nursery staff and a child?

A

Through the use of the key person approach.

A nursery worker could have the responsibility of a small number of children.

Before the child starts day care the key person should learn about their likes and dislikes enabling them to respond sensitively to the child.

The child should be supported to say goodbye to the parent.

Also at the end of the session the key person should be with the child as they are reunited with the parent.
