Application Flashcards
What is a good rule of thumb for planning air consumption and time remaining?
Rule of Thirds
1000 out (1/3)
1000 back (1/3)
1000 for ascent, safety stop, and 500 psi reserve.
What must be done after every dive in regards to equipment?
Rinse it off, as well as the inside of the BC, then partially inflate to allow it to dry.
How do you find the reciprocal (returning) heading from a degree?
Add 180
Ex. 60 degree heading reciprocal = 240
Setting up Tank and BC
- Check inspection dates
- Attach BC to tank facing away from you
- Test tank air, (knob towards you) doesn’t smell, good pressure, turn knob off
- Attach Regulator (unscrew dust cover) going over right shoulder
- Breath out of regulator, and make sure it stops when you try to breath in (clunk) x2 for emergency
- attach inflator with quick release going over left shoulder
- PSI reads zero
- Let air in, turn knob toward you until it stops, then half a turn away from you
- Check pressure gauge
- Inflate BC, deflate it with emergency release
- Check regulators breathing on it
Putting on Scuba Unit
- Backpack straps
- Waist strap
- D ring hooks tighten shoulder straps
- Chest strap
What do you have to do before breathing off of a regulator?
Purge it either manually (blow out once it’s in your mouth) or press the purge button with your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
Six Basic Skills

Six Basic Skills
2nd Reg Retreival
“Cool Guy”
Grab it at the base of the tank then clear it
Six Basic Skills
Clearing Mask
- Open mask from top, let water flood
- Look down
- put two fingers on upper corners of mask
- Exhale as you arch your neck
Six Basic Skills
Mask Retrieval
Take off the mask, then put it back on lol
Air Share Procedure
- Out of air signal is given
- Donor swims over while providing backup regulator (over shoulder, presented with plugs down)
- hand to buddy (don’t feed) grab their right shoulder strap with right hand
- ask “you okay?”
- ask “you okay to go up?”
- grab BC inflator with left hand, swim up
- 5’ from surface power inflate
- move right hand to their left shoulder, grab their right shoulder with left hand
- roll on your back as needed to keep buddy out of water as they manually inflate
- buddy will tap on head when they are floating
Emergency Swimming Ascent
- watch pressure gauge to rapidly deplete upon inhalation
- take two breaths
- drop gauge
- huge out of air signal
- knees, right hand weight belt, left hand BC inflator
- look up
- swim like hell
- at the top manually inflate
Emergency Buoyancy Ascent
- out of air signal
- take off weight belt into right hand, drop weights
- look up and slightly swim
- nearing the top spread out chest to the sky
- manually inflate BC
