appendicular skeletal system Flashcards
Shoulder girdle
-made up of 2 bones the clavicle/collarbone and scapula/shoulder blade
-contains the shoulder socket
- is a girdle
Clavivle(collarbone)
-only bone of the shoulder that attaches to the ribcage directly
- bears all the weight of the entire arm
-long bone
-infront/anterior
Scapula(shoulder blade)
- flat bone(protects internal organs and provides mobility)
- Not attached to rib cage
- posterior (back)
Shoulder socket
- ends of clavicle and scapula
- very flexible meaning easily dislocated
- proximal head of humerus is the ball into scapula held together by ligaments
Arm
made up of 3 long bones
-humers, ulna, radius
Humerus(upper arm bone )
- proximal end is the ball in the shoulders ball and socket joint
-long bone
Ulna(lower arm bone)
- lies medially
-located on pinky side “UP” - forms point of elbow
Radius
(lies lateral
- located on thumbside
The elbow is what type of joint?
hinge joint only moved back and forward
The funny bone is actually?
the ulnar nerve runs from the ring finger and pinky finger to the point that tingles in arm
Hand
contains 27 bones
phalanges
metacarpals
carpals
Phalanges (fingers)
numbered 1-v (lstersl to medial
14 total bones
Phalange 1
2 long bones bone thumb
how many bones in the phalanges
14
Metacarpals(palm)
5 long bones
knuckles at end of metacarpals
carpals(wrists)
7 short bones 1 sesamoid bone arranged in two irregular rows
Proximal- scaphoid, lunate.triquetral, pisiform
distal- trapezium,trapezoid, capitate, tlamate
Leg
-made up of 4 bones
-femur, fibula, patella, tibia
femur
-thigh bone
-longest strongest and largest bone in the body
- head of femur fits into ball and socket joint at hip
tibia
lies medially
thicker and stronger
fibula
lies laterally
smaller and thinner
patella knee cap
sesamoid bone
embedded into quadriceps muscle
lies anteriorly of distal end femur
what type of joint is the knee
- a hinge joint
-made up of femur. tibia, and fibula
foot
-26 bones
-carry all the weight of your body most is in 2 bones
phalanges, metatarsals, tarsals
phalanges
-long bones
-14
-proximal phalanges 6
-intermediate phalanges 5
- distal phalanges 5
metatarsals
-long bones
-5 phalanges
-connect phalange to tarsals
-numbered 1-V medial to lateral
- big toe=thumb
-little toe is pinky
tarsals
-7 short bones in ankle ares
- arranged in 3 rows (proximal intermediate, distal)
talus-
ankle bone
calcaneus
heel bone
what two bones are the bones that carry the most weight?
talus and calcaneus
