Definition
Inflammation of the appendix, a finger-shaped much that projects from your colon on the lower right side of your abdomen
Aetiology
A blockage in the lining of your appendix that results in infection usually by a faecolith or undigested food
The bacteria multiply rapidly, causing the appendix to become inflamed, swollen and filled with pus
If not treated promptly, the appendix can rupture
Epidemiology
Affects all age groups but is rare in the very young and very old
Clinical presentation
Can vary. Can be hard to diagnose in young children, the elderly and women of childbearing age
First symptom:
– pain around belly button, pain may be mild at first
– pain will then move into the right iliac fossa region and become more severe. As the swelling of the pancreas increases
Appetite reduces
May have nausea
Vomiting
Abdominal bloating
Guarding of the RIF
– MAY BE A TENDER MASS (ABSCESS)
