Red - Can have white grapes blended in, must be min 30% Grenache (except north of Montélimar) Must be min 70% combined G, S, M.
White - Min 80% Marsanne, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette & Viognier. Max 20% combined Piquepoul Blanc and Ugni Blanc
Rosé - Same as red, with up to 20% white varieties, combined.
Côte-Rôtie AOP
Rouge, Syrah, with up to 20% Viognier. Manual Harvest Mandatory
Côte Brune (north): mica-schistous rock - retains heat, powerful wine
Côte Blonde (south): gneiss - similar to granite, infertile & hard
Condrieu AOP
Blanc, 100% Viognier. Manual Harvest Mandatory. Sweet styles allowed, with no chaptalization for wines with a minimum 45 g/l RS.
Château-Grillet AOP
Blanc, 100% Viognier. Manual Harvest Mandatory.
3.5 ha Monopole of François Pinault. Max RS is 4 g/l.
Saint-Joseph AOP
Blanc - Marsanne & Roussanne
Rouge - Min 90% Syrah, plus Marsanne & Roussanne.
Crozes-Hermitage/Crozes-Ermitage AOP
Blanc - Marsanne and/or Roussanne
Rouge - Syrah + a max 15% Marsanne and Roussanne combined.
Max RS is 4 g/l
Hermitage/Ermitage AOP
Blanc - Marsanne and/or Roussanne
Rouge - Syrah (85% min) + max 15% Marsanne and Roussanne combined
Vin de Paille Blanc - Marsanne and/or Roussanne - NO SPECIFIED RS MAXIMUM, but grapes must be dried for 45 days to a must weight of 350 g/l
Cornas AOP
Rouge - 100% Syrah
Granite Soils, Manual Harvest Required, Max RS is 3 g/l or 4 g/l if PA is >13.5
Saint-Péray AOP
Blanc - Marsanne & Roussanne Max RS - 4g.
Mousseux Blanc - No min lees aging, may be released 12 months after tirage.
Châtillon-en-Diois AOP
The weirdo, far off to the East.
Blanc - Chard or Aligote
Rosé - 75% gamay min, plus P. Noir & Syrah
Rouge - Same as rosé
Clairette de Die AOP
Mousseux Blanc - Clairette - Max 15 g/l RS, 9 mon on lees, 3.5 atmospheres
Mousseux à Fermentation Unique (Méthode Ancestrale) Blanc & Rosé - Muscat Petit Grain, Clairette, Gamay (max 10%) Min 35 g/l RS, 4 mon on lees, 3 atmospheres
