Appearance & Classification of Epithelial Tissues W2l1/2 Flashcards
What does fixation do?
Prevents degradation/putrefaction of tissue
What are two methods and examples of fixation?
-chemical (formaldehyde)
-physical (freezing)
Two types of dyes used in staining?
-Acid (eosin)
-basic (haemotoxylin)
What are the 2 types of epithelial cell?
-covering
-glandular
What are the 3 ways to classify covering epithelial?
-no of layers
-shape
-specialisation
What is a simple epithelial tissue?
One cell thick
What is stratified epithelial tissue?
Multiple layers
What is columnar epithelial tissue?
When it is taller that it is wide
What is squamous epithelial tissue?
Really thin and flat used on exchange surfaces
Two types of specialised epithelial tissue?
-cilliated
-keratinised
What is cell polarity?
The asymmetry observed in cell shape, structure and organisation of components
What does epithelial tissue sit on?
Basement membrane
What is basement membrane made of?
Connective tissue
What is bigger cilia or microvilli?
Cillia are 10x bigger
What is more motile cilia or microvilli
Cillia
Which are more widespread cilia or microvilli
Microvilli (which is why it’s isn’t used to classify as common feature)
