Appeals to Ignorance
Also known as argument from ignorance, in which ignorance represents “a lack of contrary evidence” and becomes “a fallacy in informal logic.” It asserts that a proposition is true because it has not yet been proven as false.
Appeal to Hypocrisy
An informal logical fallacy that tries to discredit the validity of the opponent’s argument by asserting the opponent’s failure to act consistently in accordance with its conclusion(s).
Appeal to Authority
An argument from authority, also called an appeal to authority, or argumentum ad verecundiam, is a form of argument in which the opinion of an authority on a topic is used as evidence to support an argument.
Appeal to Pity
A fallacy in which someone tries to win support for an argument or idea by exploiting one’s opponent’s feelings of pity or guilt. It is a specific kind of appeal to emotion.
Ethos (Appeal to Credible Authority)
The use of credible authority in order to persuade.
Pathos (Appeal to Emotion)
The use of emotion in order to persuade someone.
Logos (Appeal to Logic)
The use of facts, data, and statistics in order to persuade someone.
