What are causes of aplastic anemia?
Hereditary: Fanconi’s anemia, others
Acquired:
Direct toxicity: radiation, chemo drugs, toxins like benzene
Indirect toxicity (prob immune): idiopathic, drugs like chloramphenicol, infections (TB, HIV, EBV, CMV, etc), pregnancy
unknown: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
What is the basic mechanism behind aplastic anemia?
Suppression or death of common myeloid progenitor cell
What are the two major causes of death in aplastic anemia?
infection or bleeding out (low platelets, and they don’t transfuse well)
What is the therapy for aplastic anemia?
Bone marrow transplantation and Antithymucyte globulin (ATG) together. ATP is an suppressant to suppress own immune response against transplant
