APHG Unit-1 Vocab Flashcards
Spatial Approach
looking at the connection between where things are located in the space on the Earth’s surface and diverse factors such as environmental dynamics, human-societal issues, and environmental-societal interaction.
Physical Geography
The branch of natural science which deals with the processes and patterns in the natural environment
Human Geography
The study of the interrelationships between people, place, and environment, and how these vary
Absolute Location
THE EXACT, PRECISE LOCATION
Latitude
the measurement of distance north or south of the Equator.
Longitude
the measurement east or west of the prime meridian.
Relative Location
a description of how a place is related to other places.
Place
describes the physical and human characteristics of any location on Earth.
Region
an area of land that has common features.
Site
the exact location of a city, you can find it on a map
Situation
relates to its surrounding features, both human-made and natural.
Sense of Place
the emotive bonds and attachments people develop or experience in particular locations and environments, at scales ranging from the home to the nation.
Toponyms
another word for name, but is specific to locations.
Distance
the space between two places
Proximity
the absolute position of something on the surface of the earth and its relative proximity to other related things
Time-Space Compression
the set of processes that cause the relative distances between places (i.e., as measured in terms of travel time or cost) to contract, effectively making such places grow “closer.”
Distance-Decay
The interaction between two places declines as the distance between the two places increases.
Density
the number of things—which could be people, animals, plants, or objects—in a certain area.
Distribution
the arrangement of features in a space
Human-Environment Interaction
the ways in which humans influence and are in turn influenced by their surrounding ecosystems
Cultural Ecology
the study of the adaptation of a cul- ture to a specific environment and how changes in that environment lead to changes in that specific culture.
Environmental Determinism
the doctrine that human growth, development and activities are controlled by the physical environment
Possibilism
the theory in geography that human behaviour, and therefore culture, is not merely determined by the environment but by human agency, as a theory it is directly opposed to determinism
Field Observation
A method of studying what people are doing and observing how their actions and reactions vary.
Spatial Data
any data related to or containing information about a specific location on the Earth’s surface.
Aerial Photography
taking of photographs of the ground from an elevated position off Earth’s surface.
Cultural Landscape
Cultural landscape is made up of structures within the physical landscape caused by human imprint/human activities.
Ex: buildings, artwork, Protestant churches in the US South - Cathedrals in Southern/western Europe, mosques in Southwest Asia
