APHG FRQ Flashcards
A. Identify TWO specific means by which new expressions in popular culture are diffused globally.
Two ways new expressions spread around the world are through podcasts and movies. Podcasts are popular because they can reach listeners from different countries, introducing new words or phrases. Movies also play a big part because they are watched by people globally, and they can bring in new slang or terms that become popular in different places.
Explain how terms diffuse spatially through EACH of the following processes.
Relocation:
In relocation diffusion, a person who uses a specific term moves to a new location and continues using the word. The term spreads because the person introduces it to a new area, and others in that area might start using it too. Sometimes, media like TV shows or online content with new terms are shared in different locations, making people in those places start using the word.
Explain how terms diffuse spatially through EACH of the following processes.
Contagious:
In contagious diffusion, a new word spreads because people around the person who uses it start saying it too. It happens quickly when the person is close to others, like in a school or neighborhood. As more people hear it, the word gets used by even more people, spreading in a chain.
Explain how terms diffuse spatially through EACH of the following processes.
Hierarchical:
Hierarchical diffusion happens when a new term starts with famous people or people in big cities. The word spreads to smaller cities and lower social groups over time as more people start using it. This type of diffusion can happen when influencers or celebrities introduce new words that others follow.
C. When new words diffuse, they confront barriers. Identify and explain TWO barriers to diffusion that are often encountered even as new terms become more popular.
Age Barriers: One big barrier to new words spreading is that older people might not want to use them. They often don’t understand or agree with the new terms, thinking they don’t fit their way of talking. This age gap can make it harder for some new words to become truly popular.
Folk Culture Barriers: Another barrier is that people who are strongly tied to tradition may resist new language. These people might not want to use new terms or technology because they prefer sticking to the old ways. This can include rejecting social media platforms like Snapchat or Facebook, as well as the new slang that comes with them.
What is a universalizing religion?
Universalizing religions are religions that are spread around the world and seek converts.
What are the different types of universalizing religions?
The biggest universalizing religion is Christianity, which believes in the Bible and that Jesus is our savior.
What is a common characteristic of universalizing religions?
A common characteristic of universalizing religions is that they actively seek converts. Christianity is no different, as it uses many tactics such as going door-to-door and seeking converts. In recent years, Christian advertisements have also become more common.
How are ethnic religions different?
Ethnic religions are different from universalizing religions because they are more focused on specific cultural groups and tend to be more isolated. They don’t usually try to spread to others.
What is an example of an ethnic religion?
An example of an ethnic religion is Judaism, one of the oldest monotheistic religions. Judaism tends to be more isolated, with large populations in the United States and Israel, where Jewish people established the country. Jewish people also do not seek converts, which is another characteristic of ethnic religions.
