APGAR - overview

A
  1. Evaluates the physical condition of the infant at 1 and 5 mins after birth. Assesses the need for resuscitation
  2. The evaluation is repeated every 5 mins until the infant achieves a score of 8, with a maximum possible score of 10

A

Appearance - white, blue, pink
Pulse - absent, 100
Grimace (reflex irritability) - none, reduced, normal
Activity (tone) - none, reduced, normal
Respiratory effort - none, irregular, regular

APGAR - scores (3)

A
0-3 = cardiopulmonary arrest, or condition caused by severe bradycardia, hypoventilation, or CNS depression
4-7 = warrants close attention to see if infant's status will improve 
Note = full term infants with normal cardiopulmonary function should score 8-9 at 1 and 5 mins
