Facts about APGAR
Used to rapidly assess the need to resuscitate
Should NOT be used to determine the need for resuscitation or to guide the steps of resucitation
NOT used to establishe asphyxia
Does NOT predict specific neurologic outcomes
It’s the 5-min score that’s a valid predictor of neonatal mortality
Activity scoring
0 - absent
1 - arms and legs flexed
2 - active movement
Pulse scoring
0 - absent
1 - below 100 bpm
2 - over 100 bpm
Grimace scoring
0 flaccid
1 - some flexion of extremities
2 - active motion (sneeze, cough, pull away)
Appearance scoring
0 - blue, pale
1 - body pink, extremities blue
2 - completely pink
Respiration scoring
0 - absent scoring
1 - slow, irregular
2 - vigorous cry
