APES Final Flashcards
5 steps of nitrogen cycle
fixation: N2 is turned into ammonia (NH4+)
nitrification: Ammonia is turned into nitrites by nitrifying bacteria (NO3-)
Assimilation: Nitrifying bacteria in incorporated into these plants
Ammonification: Ammonia turns nitrates as plants die into ammonia
denitrification: Ammonia back into N2 by bacteria
Name the five greenhouse gases we studied and their sources
Methane(CH4) anaerobic activity/agriculture, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) synthetics,
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) combustion,
Nitrous oxide (N2O) from synthetic fertilizer and
H2O, water
Name the aspects of the carbon cycle
Combustion, respiration, flux (in ocean) photosynthesis
Steps of water cycle/other phenomenon
Evaporation/transpiration (evaporation off plants)/sublimation (evaporation directly from ice),
condensation,
precipitation,
runoff,
infiltration/percolation (water through surface/water through soil)
phosphorus cycle
Comes from sedimentary rock eroding, can be combined with soil in the area and runoff into bodies of water through the water cycle
Malthusian theory
Human population grows more rapidly then food supply until they suffer due to famines/war. Human population grows exponentially
anthropogenic
environmental change caused by people
biosphere
All parts of earth life can be found
albedo
solar energy reflected back into space
positive feedback loop
product of reaction leads to increase of reaction
negative feedback loop
effects of reaction slow or stop reaction
High Ph, Lower Ph
Higher Ph means more basic, lower Ph means more acidic
