1949/50 Proibitation of mixed marriages/immortality acts?
Immediately stopped race relations between different racial groups – no marriage or sex to prevent racial mixing/diluting of perceived white purity.
Every person was classified into 4 races within a hierarchy (white, coloured, Indian or Bantu - black African). Was ambiguous so bizarre tests were used to categorise (eyelid colour or putting a pencil in the hair to see if it fell out). Public National register of race created. Rights based on race

Removed black townships from urban migration. Blacks lost property rights in White areas (unless had government permission).

Authorities Act Bantu Self-Government Act 1959
Coordinated by Hendrik Verwoerd to ensure separate development of races into self-governing tribal nations (Bantustans). Used traditional African chiefs to govern each Bantustan in return for their authority and funds.

Natives Abolition of the Pass Act
Legislated movement between racially separate areas.
Designed to protect white workers from cheap black migrant labour to urban areas.
Segregated public facilities to remove contact between races
1953 Separate Amenities Act
1953 (+1959) Bantu Education Act (Extension of University Act)
Provided seperate, inferior education for blacks. Designed to keep blacks uneducated and keep them in lower skilled jobs. Did extened black education but only for lower skilled work. Architect was H.F. Verwoerd
1956 seperate representation of voters act
Only whites could vote. Blacks only had their tribal puppet Bantustan governments. The National Party didn’t have the 2/3 majority needed to change the constitution, but removed the votes from Cape Coloureds anyway and put their supporters in the Supreme court when challenged.
What were the effects of repression?
Fears of arrest, mass protest, meetings and public assembly. Lack of freedom of speech and inability to earn money and organise opposition
