Learning

Alliteration
A brief or indirect reference to a person, a place, speech, theme, etc. that the reader/audience is expected to know.
Allusion
A story or poem that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Allegory
A novel dealing with someone’s formative years or spiritual education
Bildungsroman
A break in the middle of a line
Caesura
The continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line
Enjambment
A form of understatement that uses negation to express a positive trait
Litotes
Recurring images, quotes, or concepts that take on figurative or symbolic meaning throughout the story
Motif
The substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant
Metonymy
A subtle difference in meaning or opinion
Nuance
A short amusing story about real person or incident
Anecdote
A speech that is directed toward someone that is not present as if they were there
Aside
The repetition of the sound of a vowel in non rhyming stressed syllable near enough
Assonance
The quality of being pleasing to the ear, especially through a harmonious combination of words
Euphony
A description of the distinctive nature or features of someone or something
Characterization
