Autobiography
a type of biography which tells a life story of its author, meaning it is a written record of the author’s life. Rather than being written by someone else, an autobiography comes through one’s own pen, in his own words.
Memoir
a record of memories and particular events that have taken place in an author’s life. In fact, it is telling of a story or event from his life; an account that does not tell the full record of a life. Ex: Anne Frank’s Diary
Cumulative Sentence
known as a loose sentence that starts with an independent clause or main clause, which is simple and straight, provides the main Idea and then adds subordinate elements or modifiers. it adds subordinate or modifying elements after the subject and the predicate.
Blank Verse
a literary device defined as an un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter. In poetry and prose, it has a consistent meter with ten syllables in each line (pentameter).
Bildungsroman
a story of the growing up of a sensitive person who looks for answers to his questions through different experiences. Generally, such a novel starts with a loss or tragedy that disturbs the main character emotionally. He or she leaves on a journey to fill that vacuum.
Bildungsroman
during the journey, the protagonist gains maturity gradually and with difficulty. Usually, the plot depicts conflict and the values of society. Finally, he or she accepts those values and they accepted by society, ending dissatisfaction. A coming of age novel.
Illusion
a false illustration of something, a deceptive impression, or false belief. Literally speaking, an illusion is something that is false and not factual. It tricks the human brain into thinking an unreal into real. Meant to mislead or deceive the reader.
Free Verse
a literary device that can be defined as poetry that id free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms. Such poems are without rhythms and rhyme.
Foil
is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast to one another character with the objective to highlight the traits of another character. May also be used for comparison.
Intertextuality
a sophisticated literary device used in writing. In fact, it is a textual reference with in some text that reflects the text used as a reference. Instead of employing referential phrases from different literary works, intertextuality draws upon the concept, rhetoric or ideology from other texts to be merged in the new text. James Joyce retells the Odyssey in Ulysses.
Litotes
derived from Greek word meaning “simple”, is a figure of speech which employs an understatement by using double negatives or, in other words, positive statement is expressed by negating its opposite expressions. “not to bad” in place of “pretty good”.
Utopia
the literary term Utopia denotes an illusionary place that projects the notion of perfect society to the reader. here, the “perfect society” refers to ideal conditions achieved with in the material world as opposed to the expected idealism of afterlife in religions.
Sonnet
derived from Italian word “sonnetto” meaning small or little song or lyric. In poetry, a sonnet has 14 lines and is written in iambic pentameter. Each line has 10 syllables. It has specific rhyme scheme and “volta” or specific torn.
Round Character
a character in a play, novel, or story with a complex personality. Round characters “are like onions, they have layers,” SHREK
Vernacular
a literary genre that uses daily used language in writing and speaking. it is different from written works, as they normally follow the formal variety of language. The word “vernacular” refers to writing or speaking of public. The origins come from the middle ages in different European countries.
