Connotation
An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
Denotation
A literal or primary meaning of a word; the textbook definition.
Tone
Expresses the writes attitude toward or feelings about the subject matter and audience.
Tonal Shift
A shift in a story’s overall feeling from where it started
Diction
The author’s word choice
Details
Descriptive words in a sentence
Colloquialism
An informal expression that is more often used in casual conversation than in formal speech or writing.
Pathos
To appeal to the audience’s feelings and emotions
Ethos
An appeal to credibility
Logos
An appeal to audience’s logic
Rhetorical Question
A question asked for effect or answer is obvious.
Paradox
A statement that appears to contradict itself
Oxymoron
A figure of speech in which incongruous or contradictory terms appear side by side.
Metaphor
Comparison between 2 things that are otherwise unrelated
Simile
Compares 2 things using “like” or “as”
Hyperbole
Exaggeration & overstatement for emphasis and not to be taken literally
Alliteration
A series of words that begin with the same constant sound
Repetition
A phrase used multiple times
Anaphora
Repetition of a word or group of words at the beginning of clauses or sentences.
Polysyndeton
Uses multiple repetitions of the same conjunction (and, but, if, etc.)
Syntax
Sentence structure or how words are arranged
Parallel Structure
Using the same pattern of words to show that 2 or more ideas have the same level of importance
Fragment
An incomplete sentence

Omission of words
Catalogue
A collection of people, objects, ideas, and other elements in list form
Allusion
A circumstance from an unrelated context is referred to covertly or indirectly
Anecdote
A story about something that usually comes with a lesson or singular theme
Allegory
A symbolic fictional narrative that conveys a secondary meaning or representation of something other than it is.
Analogy
A connection between 2 ideas.
Symbol
An object, person, situation, or action that has a literal meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings
